Since 2014, we have been very proud to sponsor the Sutton Coldfield Community Games. If ever there was an event aligned with our mantra of alive to opportunity, this is it.
Last weekend saw the sixth event and – despite the attention-grabbing antics of the England football squad interrupting the Saturday afternoon – it was another huge success.
Run entirely by volunteers, the Sutton Games is akin to a village fete blended with school sports day. It’s massively popular with families – some 10,000 people attend every year – but in truth offers something for everyone, regardless of age, interest or ability.
The Sutton Games pulls together sports and activity providers from across our town and the wider region and provides a platform for them to share their passion with the public. Every provider gives a hands-on taster of their particular discipline – so this isn’t a spectator event, rather it’s a chance to get hands on.
And the array of sports and activities available is mind-boggling – over 90 at the last count, everything you’ve heard of and many you haven’t. Chongshin Do, Boccia, aerial skills, Nordic walking and parkour side by side with hockey, rugby, squash and running. Sutton Coldfield is blessed with a spectacular park, so the Games makes best use of that too, with sailing, canoeing and paddle-boarding on two of its lakes.
It then strives to inspire participation through sheer enthusiasm and help from half a dozen Olympic, Paralympic, Commonwealth and World champions. There is nothing else like it in the UK – and as own our city starts preparing to host the Commonwealth Games, it’s caught the attention of West Midlands Mayor, Andy Street, too.
WAA Chosen’s support involves us marketing the event, running the website, design and artworking services, plus managing the PR and social media programme. I’ve gone on to join the Games’ ‘core team’ to play an even wider voluntary role in organising the event. We also use our partnership to give interns working through an opportunity to test their mettle on a live job – the Games’ logo and ‘Buddy’ mascot were created by a brilliant young designer with us for work experience.
We work hard to make our own people and the clients we represent alive to every opportunity. When eyes and minds are opened, special things happen. The Sutton Games shares this deep-rooted ambition, and that’s why we think it’s made the perfect partnership.
